Weather in the Galapagos Islands

A very frequent question when planning a trip to the Galapagos Islands is about the climate of the archipelago.

What clothes should I bring? What activities will I be able to do?

In short, the climate of Galapagos has two distinct seasons: one hot and rainy, and the other cold and drizzly.

It is almost similar when compared to the seasons of mainland Ecuador. However, Galapagos is clearly regulated by the ocean currents, giving it a subtropical temperature (warm – temperate) throughout the year regardless of the season.

This makes it less hot than Continental Ecuador, which has a tropical climate, especially in the hot season.

That’s why some say that any time is ideal to visit Galapagos.

However, the climate in the islands has an influence on the activity of the wildlife that you will be able to appreciate.

The are two Galapagos seasons:

Hot and rainy seasons

  • Months of the year: December to May
  • Air temperature: 24° to 30° C
  • Sea temperature: 21° to 27° C (70° to 80° F)

This is the hottest season in the Galapagos, with high sea and air temperatures.

It is also the season with more heavy rains and high humidity.

If you come during these months, you will have days with intense sunshine, but also with a super clear sky and a calm and warm sea for swimming.

The warm season is ideal for observing life on land, as it is the time of courtship, reproduction and nesting of many species (marine iguanas, giant turtles, albatroz, cormorants, etc).

Why this weather? During these months, the influence of the cold waters of the Humboldt Current decreases, while the warm currents of El Niño predominate.

Cold and dry season

  • Months of the year: from June to November.
  • Air temperature: 19 to 26°C
  • Sea temperature: 18° to 23° C

For many foreigners, this is the best time of year to visit Galapagos islands due to its temperate climate.

June, July and August are the high season in Galapagos since they also coincide with the vacation season around the world (which makes it an expensive time to travel).

Sea and air temperatures decrease, which gives it that “cold” touch of the season, with more winds, strong currents and rougher and choppier seas.

In addition, there are usually short drizzles, so the flora dries out.

The cold season is ideal for diving and snorkeling due to the diversity of marine fauna that can be seen.

Why this weather? During this season the influence of the cold Humboldt Current increases, attracting valuable nutrients for marine life.
